Why it matters more than your website

When someone searches 'plumber near me' or 'coffee shop Colchester', Google shows the map pack — three business listings above the normal results. Those three listings get roughly 44% of all clicks. Your website, ranking fifth? Around 3%.

The map pack is powered entirely by Google Business Profiles. Not your website, not your ads, not your Instagram. Getting into that pack is worth more than most paid campaigns.

The setup that actually ranks

Verification is step one. Then obsess over these fields — most businesses fill in half of them:

• Exact business name (no keyword stuffing — Google will suppress you)
• Primary category — pick the most specific match, not the broadest
• Additional categories — up to 9, use them all if relevant
• Full opening hours including special hours for bank holidays
• Services list with descriptions and prices where possible
• 10+ photos, real ones, taken in the last 6 months
• Attributes (accessibility, payment types, amenities)

The three things that actually move rankings

Once you're set up, three things drive local rankings: proximity (you can't change), relevance (your categories and services), and prominence (reviews and citations).

You control two of the three. Ask every happy customer for a review — and reply to every single one. Get your business listed on the same major UK directories with identical name, address and phone (Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, industry-specific ones). Post to your profile weekly — Google Posts is the most under-used feature there is.

What kills a profile

Fake reviews (real, obvious ones). Stuffing keywords into your business name. Using a virtual office address. Inconsistent phone numbers across the web. Ignoring your profile for months. Any of these can suppress or suspend you.
