UK Local Citations: Which Directories Actually Matter in 2026

Ten years ago you submitted your business to 200 directories. In 2026 you need about a dozen. Here's the current shortlist that actually helps.

Updated 5 July 2026

Why citations still matter (a bit)

Google cross-references your business name, address and phone across the web to confirm you exist. Consistent listings across trusted directories provide a small but real ranking signal for local SEO. Inconsistent ones actively hurt.

The core UK directories worth doing

  • Google Business Profile (obviously)
  • Bing Places
  • Apple Business Connect
  • Yell
  • Yelp UK
  • Thomson Local
  • Scoot
  • FreeIndex
  • Cylex UK
  • TouchLocal

Industry-specific ones beat generic ones

One trade-specific citation is worth ten generic ones. Trades → Checkatrade, TrustATrader, MyBuilder. Hospitality → TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Bookatable. Health → Doctify, Trustpilot Health. Legal → Legal 500, Chambers, ReviewSolicitors. Find the top 3 in your industry.

What to skip

Anything asking you to pay for a basic listing, anything with a 90s design, anything you've never heard of, anything promising 'submit to 500 directories for £29'. All noise, no signal — and often actively harmful.
