How do I rank higher on Google Maps?

Fully complete your Google Business Profile, get real reviews consistently, build local citations, and make sure your website has location-relevant content.

/ 01

The short version

Google Maps rankings (the 'local pack') are a different algorithm from web search rankings. Optimising for one doesn't automatically optimise the other. Local SEO is a distinct discipline.

/ 02

The three ranking factors that matter

Google's local algorithm weighs three things: relevance (does your profile match the search?), distance (are you near the searcher?), and prominence (how well-known are you?).

  • Relevance: fully complete profile, primary + secondary categories, keyword-rich business description
  • Distance: you can't move your business, but service-area settings and location pages help
  • Prominence: reviews, citations, links, mentions across the local web

The tactical checklist

Fill in every field on your Google Business Profile — hours, services, products, photos, Q&A. Post weekly Google Posts. Ask for a review from every happy customer with a QR code. Get listed on Yell, Cylex, FreeIndex, and your industry directories. Add LocalBusiness schema to your website. Create a page per service area.

What not to do

Don't buy reviews — Google detects them and penalises. Don't stuff keywords into your business name unless they're your actual trading name. Don't use a virtual office or PO box (Google will suspend). Don't set up duplicate listings.

Common questions

How long to rank in the local pack?

Local rankings can move within weeks of consistent effort. Faster than web SEO.

Should I pay for Local Services Ads?

For eligible service trades (plumbers, electricians, locksmiths), yes — they appear above organic Maps and drive high-intent calls.
