What is schema markup and do I need it?

Schema is structured data that tells Google what your page is about. Yes, most business sites should use it — especially LocalBusiness, Product and FAQ schema.

/ 01

The short version

Schema markup is a way of tagging content on your page so search engines can read it programmatically. It doesn't directly boost rankings, but it unlocks rich results — stars, prices, opening hours, FAQ dropdowns — that dramatically improve click-through.

Which schema types actually matter for SMBs

You don't need to implement every schema type. Focus on the ones that generate visible SERP features for your business type.

  • LocalBusiness — every location-based business
  • Product + Offer + AggregateRating — every ecommerce product
  • FAQPage — service pages, product pages, help content
  • Review — aggregate reviews on landing pages
  • BreadcrumbList — every page beyond the homepage
  • Article — every blog post
  • Organization — homepage, sitewide

/ 03

How to implement it

Use JSON-LD in a script tag in the page head. It's Google's recommended format and by far the easiest to maintain. Avoid inline microdata unless you're stuck on a legacy CMS.

Test every implementation with Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org validator. Broken schema is worse than no schema — Google may flag it as spam.

What schema won't do

Schema won't rank a bad page. It won't recover a penalised site. It won't magically get you featured snippets on competitive terms. It gives Google clearer signals — the rest is content quality.

Common questions

Does schema help ChatGPT and Perplexity find my site?

Yes — AI crawlers rely heavily on structured data to understand entities and relationships. It's arguably more important for AI search than traditional SEO now.

Can I use a plugin to add schema?

For WordPress yes (RankMath, Yoast). For Shopify most themes cover the basics. For custom builds, embed JSON-LD directly.
