How often should I redesign my website?

A full redesign every 3–5 years. Continuous small improvements in between. Redesigning too often resets SEO and confuses returning customers.

The short version

Websites don't need a full rebuild every 18 months. They need continuous small improvements plus a strategic redesign every few years when the business, brand or platform genuinely evolves.

/ 02

Signs you need a redesign

  • Mobile experience is broken or clunky
  • Site is over 4 years old and shows it
  • Brand has evolved significantly
  • Business model changed (new services, new markets)
  • Platform is no longer supported (old WordPress themes, discontinued builders)
  • Analytics show declining conversion rate despite similar traffic
  • Google penalised or Core Web Vitals stuck in the red

/ 03

Continuous improvement beats big rebuilds

The best-performing SMB sites we work with tweak monthly and rebuild once every 4 years. The worst ignore the site for 5 years then panic-rebuild everything in 6 weeks.

How to redesign without losing SEO

Map every current URL to the new equivalent (301 redirects). Keep or improve H1s and title tags on money pages. Don't strip content that ranks. Launch quietly, monitor Search Console daily for a month, fix crawl errors fast.

Common questions

Can I redesign without an SEO drop?

Yes, with proper redirects and content preservation. Some short-term dip (2–8 weeks) is normal even done right.

How much does a redesign cost vs a new build?

Similar if you're keeping the same platform. Usually 20–40% more if you're migrating platforms too.
